Web Application Development

What are Web Applications?

Unlike largely fixed Web sites, Web applications "dynamically generate" Web pages, usually by assembling information from a back-end database. Well-known Web applications are Hotmail and eBay.

The Benefits of Web Applications

Compared to traditional desktop applications which can only be used by one person at a time while seated at a particular computer, Web applications can be simultaneously used by many people using any Internet connected computer computer with a standard Web browser from anywhere in the world. Since all computers nowadays come with built-in Web browsers, Web applications need no software to be installed and can be transparently upgraded since all of the "software" is on the Web server.

Adding a Web interface to existing "legacy" corporate databases and information systems frees your valuable information to be accessible from anywhere in the world. However, with that freedom comes risk since, done incorrectly, it can leave your sensitive corporate data vulnerable to hackers and other unauthorized users. Our experience in building Internet firewalls and building secure Web applications means we know what the dangers are and how to mitigate them so that your data is accessible only to authorized users.

The Web delivers on the promise of affordable collaboration. Where previously only large corportations spending millions of dollars on proprietary software could afford to develop distributed applications, the open standards of the Web and the widespread availability of open source software mean that the tools necessary for building Web applications are available to anyone.

Where We Fit In

While all of the tools necessary for building Web applications may be freely available to everyone, the expertise is not. That's where we fit in. We have experience in designing, building and maintaining sophisticated Web applications so we know what works and what doesn't.
